In 1888 the Imperial British East Africa Company came to Kenya and was governed as British East Africa untili 1895. In 1898 Germany turned over its coastel areas to the British. In 1895 the British government declared British East Africa a protectorate and opened the fertile highlands to the colonization of whites. In 1920 Kenya officially became a Crown Colony. Thus Kenya experienced its colonial history and was the property of the British for quite some time.
